China Silicon Conference Opens in Baotou: PV-Storage Synergy Reshapes Value

Overview

On October 10, the 2026 China Silicon Industry Conference and PV-Storage Synergy High-Quality Development Symposium opened in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. Hosted by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, the event drew more than 400 representatives from across the crystalline-silicon PV and energy-storage value chain—upstream and downstream firms, traders, financial institutions and research institutes. Under the theme “PV-Storage Synergy, Green Baotou,” it charted a new course for the “World Green Silicon Capital” after its silicon-industry output surpassed the RMB 100bn mark.

Baotou has built four RMB 100bn-scale industrial clusters—steel, rare earth, crystalline-silicon PV and aluminum—with local supporting capacity above 65%, and was named “World Green Silicon Capital” by the Global Green Energy Council in 2023. The conference added a PV-storage synergy track and an innovation showcase, debuting three technologies: a magnesium-rare-earth hydrogen-storage alloy thermal system, high-purity quartz-sand production, and supercritical CO₂ storage-generation—all aimed at dispatchable green power and greener silicon production.

Background & Interpretation

1. Industry Background and Policy Context

The global energy landscape is being reshaped and PV-storage iteration is accelerating. China’s silicon-energy sector sits at a pivotal juncture of cyclical adjustment and value-chain reconfiguration. The 15th Five-Year Plan for a New Energy System targets renewables exceeding 50% of installed wind and solar capacity and 300 GWh of new-type storage by 2030, fusing silicon, solar, storage and wind into one system.

2. Core Drivers and Mechanisms

The industry consensus is to “break through with technology and open new ground with PV-storage fusion.” Deep PV-storage synergy is the key to accommodating green power and decarbonizing industry. The supercritical CO₂ technology can recover waste heat from silicon furnaces and pair with molten-salt storage for long-duration needs—directly addressing renewable accommodation and peak-shaving pain points.

3. Market Structure and Value-Chain Impact

Baotou has approved 4.4 GW of storage, with the country’s largest single-site smart storage station and highest-voltage storage collection station now operating. Permanent-magnet motor parks, grid-forming wind and grid-side storage are grid-connected; the Guangzhou Futures Exchange added Inner Mongolia as an industrial-silicon delivery zone. The city is morphing from a silicon base into a PV-storage testbed and new-energy showcase, strengthening cluster effects.

Implications & Outlook

Near term, PV-storage synergy moves from concept to scale, with green-power direct connection and compute–power coordination entering pilots. Medium term, greener silicon production and mature long-duration storage will lift the global carbon-footprint competitiveness of China’s PV chain. Watch cyclical swings and capacity clearance.

Takeaways for Industry Participants

  • PV and storage firms should deepen co-layout, shifting from scale/price to technology/system value.
  • Silicon producers can cut unit energy use and emissions via waste-heat recovery and green-power substitution.
  • Financial institutions should explore green-finance opportunities in PV-storage integration.
