Overview
On October 14, the storage power station of the Guohua Rudong solar-hydrogen-storage integrated project—China’s largest of its kind—was officially connected to the grid. With both the PV plant and storage now operational, the “generation-storage” link is complete, leaving only the green-hydrogen production step for full integration.
Located on Rudong’s coastal shoals in Jiangsu, the project is a national third-batch “shagohuang” (desert, gobi, wasteland) renewable base and China’s first demo merging generation, hydrogen production and storage with ecological governance. It spans ~4,300 mu, with 400 MW PV, 60 MW/120 MWh storage and a 1,500 Nm³/h electrolyzer. The 400 MW PV reached full grid connection last year with 750 GWh delivered; the new storage uses 27 battery containers (5 MWh each) and 13 integrated converter units, providing ~120 MWh of peak-shaving daily.
Background & Interpretation
1. Industry and Policy Context
Under the dual-carbon goal and new power-system buildout, renewable absorption and storage are mandatory. By end-August national renewable capacity reached 2.496 billion kW (>60% share), with PV overtaking coal as the largest power source. Yet variable output creates curtailment and peaking pressure, making solar-storage-hydrogen integration a key path to absorption and value extension.
2. Core Drivers and Underlying Mechanisms
Unlike conventional solar-storage, this model treats hydrogen as an elastic absorption sink: at PV peaks with weak grid absorption, surplus power charges storage while electrolyzers ramp up, converting “excess power” into storable hydrogen; at demand peaks, storage discharges and hydrogen load yields to the grid—a “hydrogen at valley, power at peak” flexible interaction that lifts overall efficiency.
3. Market Structure and Industry Chain Impact
Run by Rudong county with Guohua Energy Investment, the Low-Carbon Institute and Jiangsu Zhongtian, the grid-side storage is centrally dispatched by Jiangsu grid. Its demonstration validates the “power-storage-hydrogen” economy and offers a replicable template for coastal and shagohuang bases, boosting electrolyzer, hydrogen-storage and fuel-cell supply chains.
Implications & Outlook
Once the electrolyzer starts, the project will yield ~482 tonnes/year of high-purity green hydrogen for local industry, closing the loop. Near-term, solar-hydrogen-storage scales from demo to deployment in coastal and shagohuang sites; medium-term watch green-H2 absorption cost, storage/transport infrastructure and carbon-market linkage.
Takeaways for Industry Participants
Generators should embed “storage + hydrogen” into integrated renewable design. Equipment makers (electrolyzers, batteries, converters) should prep long-duration, high-safety products. Industrial parks and energy-intensive firms can cut carbon costs via nearby green hydrogen and explore “green power–green H2–green ammonia/methanol” cooperation.
