Solar Becomes Top Power Source as Renewables Take 71.7% of New Capacity

Overview

At its October 30 press conference, the National Energy Administration (NEA) reported that in July China’s installed photovoltaic capacity surpassed coal for the first time to become the largest power-source category; by end-September it reached 1.31 TW. In the first three quarters, renewable additions totaled 180 GW, 71.7% of all new capacity, maintaining their dominant position; cumulative renewable capacity hit 2.518 TW, about 60.94% of the national total.

Background & Interpretation

1. Industry & Policy Context

The green transition reached a symbolic milestone. After coal’s generation share first fell below 50% in H1, it dropped further to 49.1% by end-September; July–September coal-fired generation declined YoY (-4.0%, -4.6%, -1.9%). New clean-energy generation exceeded 80% of incremental electricity, turning quantitative progress into qualitative delivery.

2. Core Drivers & Underlying Mechanisms

New-type storage underpins renewable absorption: 167 GW / 435 GWh were in operation by end-September, up 63% YoY; average duration rose to 2.61 hours and equivalent utilization to about 915 hours. Wind and solar utilization held at 92.1% and 93.1%. The three batches of large wind-solar bases have built over 157 GW, with paired storage advancing in step.

3. Market Structure & Industry Chain Impact

Investment tilted green: new-grid-related spend (grid, storage, charging) rose 15.3% YoY, hydrogen investment doubled, and private energy investment exceeded RMB 145 bn in 9M. Compute-power–electricity coordination entered scale-up: 24 provinces issued green-power-direct-connection rules and 12 compute projects were approved; 2030 compute-power electricity demand is projected at 800 TWh (about 6% of total), opening new storage and green-power demand.

Implications & Outlook

Near term, renewables’ leading role consolidates while coal shifts to balancing and backstop. Storage could approach 200 GW by year-end and keep expanding through the 15th Five-Year Plan alongside compute demand. Watch: grid and outbound-channel build-out, storage business models and pricing, and green-power-direct-connection rollout.

Takeaways for Industry Participants

Equipment and integrators should pursue large-capacity, long-duration and grid-forming storage; generators need strong utilization and market-trading skills; compute and energy firms should plan green-power direct connection early; investors can map the renewables–storage–smart grid–green consumption chain.
